Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago

02 cathedrale metropolitaine poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Santiago, Between Ocean and Andes

On the corner of Plaza de Armas stands the Metropolitan Cathedral, the seat of the Archdiocese of Santiago. Building it was no easy feat. This stunning church is actually the fifth version to stand on this site, with the earlier ones all falling victim to fires or earthquakes. The Spanish settlers hadn’t grasped how frequently the country is hit by earthquakes. Chile sits on the infamous Nazca Plate, and seismic activity has shaped much of its history. The cathedral you see today was finally completed in 1800, after centuries of setbacks. It was designed by Italian architect Joaquín Toesca, who introduced a blend of neoclassical and Baroque styles to the project. Look closely and you’ll notice the elegant details in its façade—but don’t stop there. Step inside and you’ll discover a peaceful space filled with an exceptional collection of liturgical art. It’s a calm, reflective pause from the buzz of the city, and best of all, entry is free. You’ll also find the Museum of Sacred Art next door, home to some remarkable treasures like 16th-century Bavarian silverware once owned by the Jesuits, antique religious furnishings, and other beautifully preserved artifacts. Just keep in mind that if you’re visiting on a Sunday, access is limited out of respect for mass, so plan accordingly.
