Saint Ignatius Church

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit San Francisco, The Summer of Love
You are probably wondering where we are headed to after climbing these steep streets! The answer is right in front of you, and I sure hope you’re dazzled! This is the magnificent Saint Ignatius Church! It’s quite stunning with its columns and baroque facade. Many say it’s the most beautiful in San Francisco! It would have been a shame to pass on it! It’s the 5th and final version of the city’s Jesuit church. The first was built in 1855 and is dedicated to the founder of the Society of Jesus, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The one you’re admiring today was built in 1914 and serves as chapel for the university just behind it. Don’t hesitate to take a look inside! The decoration is imposing and impressive, the dome, is simply spectacular! Additionally, four former chapels have been converted into a contemporary art gallery, the Manresa Gallery, where you can discover a variety of local artists.
