Entrance of the Golden Gate Park

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, The Summer of Love
You’re now walking along San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Park. You’re free to explore it if you’ve got a bit of free time on your hands, but be warned, it’s a big place! We’re talking 412 hectares. To give you an idea, if you’ve been to New York and were astonished by the size of Central Park, well, it’s an hectare bigger! It’s the third most visited public park in the country! It is probably intentional that it’s a just a tad bigger than Central Park, because the project dates back to 1860, when residents asked the municipality for a public park that could rival the one that was springing up in NYC. In the middle of those million trees, you’ll find several buildings and gardens. These include, in no particular order: the San Francisco De Young Museum, the Flowers Conservatory, one of the world’s largest Victorian greenhouses, a Japanese garden, the Botanic Garden, several artificial lakes with islands and waterfalls, a sports stadium, an ancient carousel still in use, the California Academy of Sciences, which houses the Museum of Natural History, aquariums, a planetarium and a 3D movie theater. You’ll also see the National Aids Memorial Grove, a memorial created in 1988 to commemorate the victims of AIDS. A fitting place to visit in a city like San Francisco, which is considered the capital of the US gay community.
