Alamo Square and Painted Ladies

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, The Summer of Love
Here you are, in the heart of the famous Alamo Square, so famous that it eventually gave its name to the entire neighborhood! From the heights of the park, once the view is clear and the well-known fog has lifted, you can catch a glimpse of the Transamerica Pyramid, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge. But obviously, what we came to see here are the international stars of the city: the Painted Ladies! This row of seven sublime Victorian houses painted with vibrant colors, also known as the 7 sisters, quickly became one of the icons of San Francisco. They were all built by Matthew Kavanaugh between 1892 and 1896 and are among the oldest houses in the city. The term “painted ladies” first appeared in a book about San Francisco written in 1978. Since then, the expression has stuck. You may remember seeing them in the opening credits of the classic 90s TV show: Full House, which certainly contributed to their popularity. Don’t look for guided tours; these are private homes and not open to the public. In 2014, one of them was sold for $3.1 million. Considering the owner had bought it for $65,000 in 1975, you could say he made the deal of the century!
