Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, The Summer of Love
As you can see, we’re in the district of beautiful Victorian houses. Here, all along the street, you’ll find magnificent examples of the colorful buildings typical of the region. Above all, Victorian architecture refers to an era. That of Queen Victoria’s reign over the United Kingdom, from 1837 to 1901. Particularly suited to local tastes, lifestyles and building materials, this style of construction really took off in San Francisco. The Victorian era was also a time of great economic growth, with an expanding middle class and the rise of the Industrial Revolution and mass production. You’ll find everything from tightly-packed Victorian onion-row houses built for factory workers to mini castles with gardens for the more prosperous. These homes, typically 3 stories high, are usually built out of redwood and feature an octagonal or round tower and porch. Inside, there’s usually a grand staircase, inevitably, with three floors, a decorative fireplace and stained-glass windows. Wouldn’t you love to be able to live in one?
