Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, The city by the bay

You’ve seen it from the beginning, here is the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. It is known as the “Italian Cathedral of the West” despite not actually being a cathedral. It has served as a religious and cultural hub for the entire Italian-American community of San Francisco. The first church, built in 1884, was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1906. This was one of the most significant tragedies in San Francisco’s history, with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale, the tremors and the ensuing fires destroyed 80% of the city and claimed over 3,000 lives. This disaster is considered the deadliest earthquake in United States’ history. The current building, constructed to replace the first church, was built in 1924. However, two years later, it was targeted in five bomb attacks by radical anti-Catholic anarchists. These attempted destructions came to an end in 1927 when the police fatally shot a man who was lighting a new fuse and wounded his accomplice, who later died from his injuries. In recent years, the church has become very popular among San Francisco’s Chinese population, and it now offers weekly masses in English, Italian, and Cantonese!
