Fisherman’s Wharf

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, The city by the bay
Here’s another iconic image of San Francisco: the Fisherman’s Wharf sign, marking the renowned fisherman’s wharf. So renowned that the entire dock area ended up with the name of Fisherman’s Wharf. This is San Francisco’s oldest harbor, created when the city’s population was booming with gold fever. Italian fishermen settled here in the 1850s, and the area soon became an important fish market. Today, as you may have noticed, the area is very popular among tourists, but you can still find fresh fish and fishermen! For early birds, Pier 47, nicknamed Fish Alley, is the place to be if you want to see the fishermen unloading their catches. But the most important thing here is to eat! You can’t leave San Francisco without trying one of its seafood specialties! For starters, there’s the famous fresh crab, cooked in pots of bubbling water and served with bread and butter, and of course, the succulent clam chowder, a specialty of the Northwestern U.S. and Canada. This clam chowder comes in a hollow sourdough loaf and was served to sailors to keep warm during the harsh winters. Pier 45 is also home to World War II boats and submarines, the Mechanic Museum and a small chapel dedicated to sailors lost at sea.
