Here’s another of the neighborhood’s most iconic facades, the New Mission Theatre. Originally built by the Reid Brothers in 1916, it was renovated for the Nasser Brothers by the same architect who built the Castro Theatre. Timothy Pflueger transformed the building into an Art Deco masterpiece. Its 21-meter red sign became a local landmark and gave the cinema its distinctive style. Initially, it only showed B movies – low-budget films often screened in double sessions interrupted by ads. As children of this culture and to pay tribute to it, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, released the movie Grindhouse. It consisted of two feature-length segments, “Planet Terror” directed by Rodriguez and “Death Proof” directed by Tarantino, along with fake trailers and advertisements to recreate the experience of watching films in a grindhouse theater just like New Mission theatre was. Closed in 1993, the cinema became a supply store before being purchased by the City College of San Francisco to tear it down and build a new campus. The efforts by the “Save the Mission Theatre” group succeeded in preventing the theater’s destruction. It was eventually renovated and taken over by the Alamo Drafthouse cinema chain, which is known for serving meals during screenings, while having a very strict etiquette on appropriate behavior in a theatre.
