La maison bleue

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit San Francisco, Open and Engaged city
There is a famous French song about San Francisco and this small blue house, that every single frenchie knows! Allow me to tell you its story. At the age of 22, Maxime le Forestier traveled to San Francisco and spent a month in a hippie community housed in a blue house. Strongly marked by this experience, upon his return to Paris he wrote this song , and it became a hit! For his 40th anniversary, his record company went on the search for this famous blue house. Luckily, the singer found his old address book from 1971, and an agreement was made with the new owners. The house, which was painted green, has been repainted blue, and a commemorative plaque installed, so that every French visitor in San Francisco can go and see in person the blue house that inspired several generations. Please don’t forget that it’s inhabited, so remain discreet.
