Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, Open and Engaged city

On your right is a large mural showing the struggles of the LGBT community, from Harvey Milk waving the multicolored flag, to the fight against the terrible AIDS epidemic. San Francisco played a key role in the fight against AIDS in the United States. In the early 80s, the city witnessed a veritable epidemic of the disease sweeping through the Castro district, with homosexual individuals being the first victims. Their bodies suddenly seemed to lose all control, and their immune defenses weakened before disappearing. A time of total panic and raging helplessness. By 1990, AIDS had become a global disease. The United Nations made it its number 1 health priority. San Francisco hosted one of the first major world conferences on the epidemic, and was at the front line of this new struggle. Today, San Francisco is home to the largest community of people living with HIV in America. But the city’s objective is clear: to continue the fight, intensify prevention measures, multiply early detection, halt the spread of the virus and achieve the “Getting to zero” goal by becoming the first American city to eradicate the virus. All in all: it’s a really great program.
