GLBT History Museum

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, Open and Engaged city
Around the corner on your right is the GLBT History Museum. This tiny museum, with a ridiculously small entrance fee is a gold mine of information tracing the history of the community. It’s the first of its kind in the U.S. and there are only two others in the world, in London and Berlin. It’s definetely a landmark! So, you’re probably familiar with the meaning of the acronym LGBT, but with the new, more inclusive acronyms, you can quickly get lost. Right now, the most comprehensive is LGBTQQI2SAA+ I know, I lost you at the second Q. You’ve come to the right place for a quick reminder, so here we go: First of all, you should know that the L, for Lesbian, was the first to appear! For centuries, it was associated with the Greek poetess Sappho, from the island of Lesbos. Then, G for Gay, B for Bisexual, T for Transgender, Q for Queer, which in the end covers just about everyone, since being Queer simply means not fitting into the dominant models of sexuality. The second Q stands for Questioning; I for Intersex, 2S for Two-spirited (although I confess it’s less well known, it’s the fact of considering oneself both male and female, and comes from the indigenous people of North America, who consider that there are 4 genders), A stands for Androgynous, the second A stands for Asexual (like Freud), and the + for all the others, to make sure we don’t forget anyone. Now you’re ready to visit the neighborhood!
