24th Street is particularly rich in street art, and I hope you’ve enjoyed the artwork you’ve come across so far. I’d now like to draw your attention to the facade of this house beautifully repainted in 2018 by several community muralists. There’s a lot to decrypt in this mural. Take a closer look. Entitled Alto al Fuego en la Misión, which roughly translates to “ceasefire in the Mission neighborhood” in English. The painting pays tribute to several homicide victims, all killed by the San Francisco Police Department in the past few years. The mural is dedicated to Amilcar Perez Lopez, a 21-year-old Guatemalan immigrant, whose death by six bullets in the back fired by the San Francisco police sparked intense emotion and attracted the attention of medias of the world. On the top right, you can see his family mourning him in their village, demanding justice. The detail on Amilcar with his hands repelling weapons was added in honor of the original “Alto al fuego” mural painted by Juana Alicia condemning the wars in Central America in the 1980s. Other faces are added to the fresco. Between the flowers and candles, you see the names of other community members recently killed by the SFPD. The artist also added the names of several migrants shot dead on the country’s southern border to the mural. A splendid work to honor the dead and fueling thought about the world we want to live in.
