Portsmouth Square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, From skycrapers to fortune cookies
Here we are, right in the heart of Chinatown, and as a matter of fact, in the heart of San Francisco itself. Portsmouth Square is located on the spot of the first Mexican settlement in Yerba Buena, which was San Francisco’s original name until 1847. It’s a bustling hub for locals, who can often be seen practicing Tai Chi or engaging in lively games of Chinese chess. Keep an eye out for a small monument dedicated to the esteemed writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who lived nearby. In case you need a reminder, he’s the Scottish author behind the famous novel “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” You’ll also come across a replica of the Goddess of Democracy. This statue, holding the torch of liberty, was originally created by students at the Beijing School of Fine Arts during the final days of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. The movement, led by Chinese students, intellectuals, and workers, advocated for significant political and democratic reforms. Despite the destruction of the original statue by the Chinese army, several replicas were created and installed in various cities around the world, including Washington, Vancouver, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Toronto.
