Jessie Square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, From skycrapers to fortune cookies
Here you are at the pleasant little Jessie Square, facing both the Contemporary Jewish Museum and Saint Patrick’s Church. The museum, founded in 1984, presents a modern and in-depth vision of Jewish culture and history. Right next to it, standing out in its red brick attire, is the small Irish church of Saint Patrick’s, founded in 1851. The one you see today is an exact replica of the original, which was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake. In 1968, it became a historic monument and resisted the transformation of the neighborhood in which it has been located in for over a century. It has seen numerous priests come and go, reflecting the changing demographics of the district. The first to settle here were the Irish at the end of the 19th century. Then, the Spanish community took their place, and laterthe Filipino community. Nevertheless, the church kept the symbols of its earliest occupants and the national colors of Ireland. If you enter, you’ll notice the use of Connemara green marble and observe that the Tiffany-style stained glass windows depict the patron saints of the 32 counties of Ireland.
