Dragon’s gate

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit San Francisco, From skycrapers to fortune cookies
I think this arch speaks for itself and you probably understood that you’re about to enter San Francisco’s famous Chinatown. This is the Dragon’s Gate marking the southern entrance to the district. The gate was gifted in 1969 by the Republic of China, which provided the materials for its construction. As tradition dictates, they are carved from a single block of stone and placed like yin and yang, the male to the West and the female to the East. These guardians, frequently installed in front of temples, pagodas or mausoleums, symbolize power, strength and ferocity. They bring security and health to the people they protect. You can also see inscriptions under each of the blue-tiled arches. Just in case you don’t know how to read Mandarin allow me to read it for you. On the left-hand portal, you have: “Trust, Justice and Peace”, on the right portal: “Love and Final Piety”, and finally, in the center: “All under heaven is for the good of the people”. You can walk through it and enter the wonderful world of the largest Chinese community outside Asia, and the oldest Chinatown in North America.
