Viewpoint on the Fortress
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
Standing here on this bridge over the Salzach River, you’ve got a picture-perfect view of one of Salzburg’s most iconic landmarks: Hohensalzburg Fortress. It’s one of the city’s must-see sights, and a true gem of Austria, but while you wait to visit it up close, here’s a little background on this impressive stronghold.
Perched high on Festungsberg hill, Hohensalzburg is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, stretching 250 meters long and 150 meters wide. It was built by the prince-archbishops of Salzburg to defend the city, keep watch for enemy attacks, and show off the city’s wealth and power. Construction began in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein, though back then it was far smaller than what you see today.
Its current form is the result of centuries of expansions, reinforcements, and architectural changes. To get up there, you can either hike for about 20 minutes or hop on the funicular. And fun fact, this funicular, though now fully modernized, is one of the oldest of its kind. The first version dates all the way back to 1515, when it was used to haul supplies up to the castle!
Over the years, the fortress has had a colorful history, besieged in the 16th century, seized by French troops in 1800, turned into a prison in the 20th… and today, it still stands as one of the best-preserved castles in Europe, with over 1,000 years of history behind it. Inside, you’ll find exhibitions that take you deep into Salzburg’s past, plus, you’ll get sweeping views over the city and the mountains beyond.
But for now, let’s cross back over the Salzach and keep exploring!
