Residenzplatz

You’ve just arrived at Residenzplatz, the main square of Salzburg. From here, you get a perfect view of the cathedral’s striking architecture, especially its massive dome, but there’s a lot more to see than just that.

To the right of the cathedral, housed in an elegant Baroque building, you’ll find the former residence of Salzburg’s prince-archbishops. Inside, you can explore their lavishly decorated apartments, admire art collections from the 16th to 19th centuries, and wander through more than 180 rooms filled with antique furniture. This grand palace, simply called the Residenz, was built in the 16th century, replacing the old episcopal palace that dated all the way back to 1232.

It’s hosted a long line of powerful princes, starting with Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who commissioned its construction to reflect his status and authority. And once you step inside, it won’t take much imagination to grasp just how wealthy and influential these archbishops really were.

One more reason this place is so special? It’s where Mozart gave his very first concert before the court, at just six years old, back in 1762. He returned many times afterward to perform for the archbishops, who, like us today, recognized his extraordinary talent. And even now, concerts are still held in the Knights’ Hall, so if that sounds like something you’d enjoy, check the schedule!

It’s a unique way to experience one of Salzburg’s most beautiful landmarks while diving into the city’s musical soul. But if you’re not heading inside just yet, go ahead and cross the square, another monument awaits on the other side.
