Mozart’s Birthplace
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
One of the highlights of Getreidegasse, beyond its unmistakable charm and irresistible boutiques, is this striking yellow house that’s nearly impossible to miss. And lucky you, because this is the birthplace of Salzburg’s most famous prodigy: Mozart.
It was here, at number 9 Getreidegasse, that the Mozart family settled in 1747, and nearly a decade later, in 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. He would later move to another house in the city, but this is where he spent his childhood, learned to play the violin and piano, and composed his very first pieces, at just six years old.
Inside this historic home, you’ll step into an 18th-century bourgeois residence and explore the life of this extraordinary composer. You’ll come across letters, portraits, personal documents, and original belongings, including his childhood violin and clavichord. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of classical music or just curious, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Mozart’s life, legacy, and creative genius.
Opened in 1880, it’s now the most visited museum in the world dedicated to a single person! So go ahead, step inside and meet the boy genius who became a global icon.
