Mozart Denkmal
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
Now turn around… standing before you is one of the greatest figures in music history, Mozart. This statue, located right here in Mozartplatz, is a true symbol of the city. After all, Salzburg is where the world-famous virtuoso was born and raised, before moving on to Vienna. It’s here that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, son of Leopold Mozart, first became a legend.
On September 5th, 1842, this bronze statue was unveiled in his honor, marking the 50th anniversary of his death.
The square was packed with people for the occasion, including Mozart’s sons. The monument was made possible thanks to King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who helped fund the marble pedestal. The statue itself was created by Ludwig von Schwanthaler and Johann Stiglmaier. All around the square, you’ll find major landmarks like St. Rupert’s Cathedral, St. Michael’s Church, and the New Residenz, along with the tourist office, souvenir shops, and cafés, perfect for a little break.
At number 8 on the square, you’ll also find the former home of Constanze Mozart-Nissen, the composer’s wife, who became a widow in 1791. Sadly, she passed away on March 6th, 1842, just months before the statue’s unveiling. Lively, historic, and deeply cultural, this is one of Salzburg’s most iconic and beloved squares.
