Mirabell Gardens
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
You’re now stepping into one of Salzburg’s most beautiful green spaces, the Mirabell Gardens. Unsurprisingly, they belong to the nearby Mirabell Palace. These elegant baroque gardens, designed in the French style, were created in 1690 by Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun.
The palace itself was built earlier, in 1606, by another influential archbishop, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who left a major mark on the city’s architecture. The gardens came later, designed to complement the grandeur of the palace. In fact, they were the very first formal gardens built in the entire German-speaking world, and they were an instant hit with the people of Salzburg, though they only became accessible to the public in 1854.
Today, they’re filled with colorful flowerbeds, fountains, an orangery, rose gardens, and even a whimsical dwarf garden, all of which make this place a must-see. Peaceful, harmonious, and full of history, the Mirabell Gardens are the perfect spot to relax and take a break from the bustle of the city, so take your time and enjoy!
