Landestheater
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
The Landestheater is one of Salzburg’s most historic performance venues. Built in 1775 on the site of a former ballroom, it was commissioned by Prince-Archbishop Colloredo. Shortly after its opening, a young Mozart performed here for the first time, eventually becoming a regular at the theatre.
Over the centuries, and still today, Mozart’s music continues to echo through this space, which was completely rebuilt in the 1890s. A true hub of artistic expression, the Landestheater has long offered performances that are accessible to all, welcoming audiences from near and far.
Today, its stage hosts everything from contemporary and modern theatre to reimagined classics, children’s shows, baroque and modern operas, and, of course, Mozart’s timeless works.
With a capacity of 1,000 seats, it’s one of the key venues used during the world-renowned Salzburg Festival. Founded in 1920, this summer-long celebration of opera, theatre, and classical music draws over 240,000 visitors each year. The Landestheater isn’t just a beautiful theatre, it’s part of Salzburg’s cultural soul, in the city that gave the world one of its greatest composers.
