Alter Markt
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
You’re now standing in what was once Salzburg’s main marketplace. This lively square has been a central gathering spot since the 13th century, originally designed to welcome merchants from across the city. It’s full of life year-round, during the summer, its wide terraces fill with locals and visitors enjoying drinks, dining al fresco, and soaking up the atmosphere.
In winter, the vibe turns cozy and festive, with people stopping by for a hot chocolate to warm up in the chilly air. At the center of the square, you’ll find the Saint Florian Fountain, and just across from it hides a fun little surprise, the smallest house in Salzburg!
Tucked between two much larger buildings, it barely rises above street level and looks almost toy-like in comparison. Step inside the little shop that now occupies it and see for yourself just how tiny it really is!
