Submarine Base

14 base sous marine poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Saint-Nazaire, Sea & Steel

Towering over the Saint-Nazaire landscape, the submarine base is one of the city’s most striking landmarks—both in scale and in symbolism. Its story begins in 1941, when Nazi Germany built five massive submarine bases along the Atlantic coast to shield its U-Boats from British air attacks. Constructed in just 16 months on the site of the former transatlantic terminal, this colossal concrete fortress played a key strategic role during the war. But it wasn’t just a military installation—it was also a fully functional living space. Up to a hundred men were stationed here until May 1945, and the base was equipped with everything they needed: 62 technical workshops, 150 offices, 20 pumping stations, 2 bakeries, 4 kitchens, and 92 bedrooms. In its time, it was a self-contained war machine. After the war, the base stood silent and abandoned for years. But today, this 300-meter-long giant, with a roof nearly 10 meters thick, has found a new purpose. Once a symbol of war and occupation, it has been transformed into a space for culture, history, and tourism. As you explore its massive concrete halls—each one echoing with the weight of the past—you’ll experience a powerful, slightly haunting immersion into history. Just grab your ticket, and step inside.
