If you’re looking for art in Saint-Nazaire, there’s no need to search high and low—it’s right there in the streets. For several years now, artists from around the world have been invited to bring color and creativity to the city’s public spaces. As you wander through town, you’ll come across stunning murals of all sizes, created by graffiti artists from places as far-flung as Chile, Australia, the United States, and Brazil. Despite their different backgrounds, these artists share a common goal: to celebrate their cultural roots through art. Many of these vibrant works were created during the Les Escales festival, held every July since 2015, which has become a major event for music and street art alike. One of the standout pieces—possibly right in front of you—is by Matt Adnate, a renowned Australian artist. Painted in 2018, it captures the powerful, soulful gaze of a young boy from Aboriginal culture. The detail and emotion in his work are striking. So keep your eyes open as you explore—Saint-Nazaire is full of surprises, and its walls are bursting with color, stories, and inspiration.
