Commando square

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Saint-Nazaire, Sea & Steel
Place du Commando is perfectly positioned facing the Loire estuary—and it’s become the city’s new go-to spot for fun, relaxation, and good times. New? Yes, because this welcoming meeting place, popular with both longtime locals and curious visitors, was only officially opened in July 2018. It’s part of a major effort by the city to breathe new life into the seafront and boost the vibrancy of the town center. And the result? A lively, inviting space that’s already a favorite for enjoying life’s simple pleasures—whether that means sharing a great meal with a view or taking a slow, peaceful stroll by the sea. Spanning over 4,500 square meters, the area has been thoughtfully designed to offer something for everyone: sunbathing, aperitifs with friends, even outdoor events—all basking in the southern light, just across from what locals affectionately call the “crab claws.” Don’t worry, not the kind you’ll find on your plate, but the two arms of Saint-Nazaire’s jetties that stretch out toward each other in the distance. With all these options around you, the hardest part might just be deciding what to do first!
