Watch dogs

As you stroll past Saint-Pierre Gate on the ramparts, take a moment to admire Guet Square below. This is where the night watch used to work. Now, let me share a little story with you. You might notice a hotel named “Hotel des Chiens du Guet”. Well, from 1155 to 1770, Saint-Malo took security pretty seriously. At 10 PM, they’d release a pack of Great Danes to enforce the curfew. And guess what? They wouldn’t feed them until the next morning – you can probably figure out why! However, the dogs were dismissed after they attacked a navy officer. Thankfully for the residents, who didn’t have phones or watches back then, there was a bell called the “Noguette” that rang a few minutes before 10 PM to remind everyone it was time to head home. It still rings every day. During the COVID-19 curfew, it even rang an hour earlier at 9 PM. But don’t worry, they didn’t release the dogs!
