Old convent of the Récollets

29 ancien couvent des recollets saint malo poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Saint-Malo, All hands on deck !

This beautiful closed bridge crossing the street is part of the remains of the old convent of the Récollets. The Récollets brothers were part of a reform movement within the Franciscans. They were a mendicant order, relying entirely on charity. They’re best known for their missionary work in the New World, particularly in Quebec and South America. The order disappeared as the French Revolution broke out. This convent was built in the 17th century. Despite being built mainly of wood, a material banned after the Great Fire of 1661, it is still standing! Only the bridge, the courtyard gate, the facade and the remnants of the cloister remain from this convent. All of these vestiges have been listed as Historical monument since 1946.
