National Fort

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Saint-Malo, All hands on deck !
Welcome to the rocky headland where the National Fort proudly stands! Saint-Malo is protected by maritime fortifications designed by Vauban, a royal engineer responsible for nearly all the fortresses of France, and to whom Louis XIV had entrusted the delicate task of protecting the French coasts from English and Dutch invaders. A task he succeded in ! Attacks were numerous, but never breached Vauban’s defenses. Getting an up-close look at the National Fort is like stepping back in time and witnessing Vauban’s military genius. Its drawbridge, portcullis, and walls have all been meticulously restored, making this place a historical landmark, where you can practically hear the echoes of battles from past centuries. Believe it or not, the fort was only taken over once, and that was during World War II. It was repurposed as a prison and over 300 people suffered hell within its walls. Sadly, during the 1944 bombing by the Americans, parts of the fort were destroyed, and many prisoners were killed. You’ll find a commemorative plaque honoring their memory. Despite its tumultuous history, the fort maintains its reputation as an invicible bastion. According to the legend, Robert Surcouf, a famous privateer, won his very first duel right here! And get this – he allegedly defeated his next 11 opponents in a nick of time. When faced with his 12th enemy, he spared the man’s life, stating, “I spare your life, Sir, as I need a witness.” Make sure the French flag is up – that’s your cue that the monument is open to visitors!
