Chateaubriand’s grave

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Saint-Malo, All hands on deck !
Respecting his wish to be buried here in order to continue, I quote, “his conversation with the sea,” Chateaubriand’s grave, simple and without a name, lies with only the epitaph: “A great French writer wished to rest here to hear nothing but the sea and the wind.” For the record, there’s someone who didn’t respect this last wish! It’s our friend Jean-Paul Sartre! Simone de Beauvoir spilled the beans in her memoirs, recounting that Sartre, finding the grave pompous, urinated on it!
