Major churches nearby

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Rome, The Eternal City
As you may have guessed, we’re headed for the iconic Colosseum. But in the meantime, if you’re up for visiting some of Rome’s major churches, you can take the Via Cavour on your left to get to the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. It’s called “Major” because it’s the largest of 26 churches in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Legend has it that the latter appeared to the Pope and told him to build it right here! And the next day, it snowed and the snow marked out the outline of the building. Not far from here, you’ll also find St Peter’s Basilica, home to Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses and the actual chains that bound Saint Peter.
