Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Rome, The Eternal City
Introducing the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. This church in the heart of the Trastevere district has quite a history! It’s believed to be the first official place of Christian worship built in Rome. Its original foundations date back to the 3rd century, and are said to have been laid by Pope Calixtus I. Legend has it that in 38 BC, an oil spring miraculously welled up here, foretelling the rise of Christianity, which was but a minor cult at the time. The church has been rebuilt and redecorated several times over the centuries, but not much has changed, which explains its distinctly medieval style. From where you’re standing, you can admire the beautiful mosaic fresco depicting the Virgin and Child surrounded by 10 women bearing lanterns. But wait till you see the interior. Prepare to be awe-struck! The mosaics in the choir are truly a masterpiece of Byzantine art, dating back to the 12th century. And the best part? Admission is completely free!
