Piazza di Spagna

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Rome, From the Trevi Fountain to the Vatican
Back in 1620, the Piazza di Spagna was a Spanish foothold housing the country’s Embassy to the Holy See. The whole square was under Spanish rule, and the Spaniards had their own administration and troops stationed there. But before Spain, France also had its eye on the place. See the church at the top of the stairs? That’s the Church of Santissima Trinità dei Monti. It was built at the request of Louis XII in the 16th century and it’s owned by the French state! The fleur-de-lys atop the obelisk is actually a tribute to the French from Pope Pius VI. The staircase was also built and financed by the French, to connect the church to the Spanish Embassy. Let’s just say that before that, walking all the way up the hill was no easy feat. They even planned to add an equestrian statue of Louis XIV. But that never happened! Today, thanks to its prime location, the Piazza di Spagna is a favorite hangout spot for locals. It’s right by Via dei Condotti, a famous shopping street, and it’s always bustling with activity. You won’t find any striking, grandiose buildings here, just charming, warmly-colored apartment blocks and, of course, the stunning Barcaccia fountain, beautifully set against the Spanish Steps with the church at the top.
