War Memorial
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Rodez, The Old Historic City
Here you are at the war memorial of Rodez, standing at the entrance to the Foirail Garden. Created in 1923 by the Aveyron-born sculptor Denys Puech, this bronze statue of Victory was raised in tribute to the soldiers of Rodez who lost their lives in the First World War. On its base, you can read the words: “The city of Rodez to its victorious sons,” surrounded by the engraved names of those who never came home. Commissioned as early as 1919, the project stirred debate, but Puech managed to prevail with this sober, dignified figure, and he even refused any payment for himself. Relocated and restored in 2014, the monument now stands within the Foirail Garden, alongside other sculptures, and continues to serve as a solemn place of remembrance for the city.
