Saint-Nicolas-du-Port Chapel

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Roanne, A rich history of craftsmanship on the banks of the Loire
The little building standing here, as if out of nowhere, is the Saint-Nicolas-du-Port Chapel, which was built in 1630 by bargemen. At that time, the plague had just swept through the town, leaving many victims in its wake. When the epidemic subsided, it was decided to build this chapel to thank the heavens and pray that the disease would not return. It was used for bargemen’s meetings and a few weddings, before being abandoned for several years during the French Revolution. It then became a post office, a shipping office, a grain store, and a private home, until it was restored in the 1970s. The building is a true testament to the past!
