Saint-Étienne Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Roanne, A rich history of craftsmanship on the banks of the Loire
This beautiful church is one of Roanne’s historic gems. It is believed that a place of worship had already been established here in Roman times, however, the first church to be officially built here dates back to 1610, making it the oldest in Roanne. The building had a completely different appearance from the one in front of you, and was entirely remodelled some fifty years later. The church you see today was completely rebuilt in the 19th century in the flamboyant Gothic style. It was designed by Chenavard, a painter and architect from Lyon who was awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1853. The church is built from Brionnais yellow stone, which gives it a warm tone and a colourful appearance that stands out in the square. It has some exceptional stained glass windows, notably those dating back to 1513 which were given to the town by Louis XII himself!
