Roanne Castle

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Roanne, A rich history of craftsmanship on the banks of the Loire
A few centuries ago, this was the site of a large fortified castle. Its construction began in the 11th century. Nowadays, all that remains is the building in front of you, which was the castle’s keep. Unfortunately, it is not open to visitors. It is the oldest building in the town and has been a listed monument since 1930. The tower is 20 metres high and was built with Villerest pebbles by Bérard de Roanne, lord of the Roanne and Crozet castles. It used to be surrounded by an enclosure, a moat and a drawbridge that enabled access to the castle. It was there to protect the town. Today, the keep is still standing, and thanks to its recent restoration, it remains a tangible reminder of Roanne’s rich historical past. The interior features a room whose ceiling is entirely decorated with coats of arms dating from the 19th century, another masterpiece of Roanne’s heritage. To its left is a Renaissance façade added in the 19th century by the knight Saint Thomas, which is now the entrance to the tourist office.
