George Clémenceau Square

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Roanne, A rich history of craftsmanship on the banks of the Loire
George Clémenceau square is home to 2 of Roanne’s landmarks. The first is the building on the other side of the road which is the courthouse. Formerly located within the walls of a castle, in 1810 it was transferred to this building, which was a former Ursuline convent built in the 17th century. During the Revolution, the Ursulines were driven out and the convent became a prison, before being converted into a courthouse. However, the northern part remained a prison until 2008. Gérard Depardieu even shot a few scenes there for Claude Berri’s film Uranus. The second landmark is the imposing statue in front of you, which pays tribute to the victims of the violent Franco-Prussian war that took place between 1870 and 1871.
