Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Roanne, A rich history of craftsmanship on the banks of the Loire
Welcome to the Diderot Covered Market, renowned for its gastronomic delights! Located in a building that opened in 1983, the Diderot covered market features the finest specialities from the town and the region. It replaced the old covered market on the Bourse du Travail Square, which was demolished in 1963. Now, what’s there to taste here? Well, let’s start with the big names: the covered market is home to the famous Pralus bakery and chocolatier, opened in Roanne in 1948 by Auguste Pralus, who was awarded the title of Best Craftsman in France a few years later. He created the delicious praluline, a brioche with pralines and butter that tends to bring everyone together. Nowadays, his son François Pralus has taken over, and what sets him apart is that he makes his own chocolate, which is quite rare these days. So, if there’s one thing you have to try here, it’s this… Oh, but that’s not all! For cheese lovers, there’s Fromagerie Mons, whose founder was awarded the title of Best Craftsman in France in 2000. Another renowned craftsman and 2007 award winner is Etienne Chavrier, owner of Poissonnerie Chavrier. Coffee lovers should pay a visit to the Thivoyon boutique, where a wide variety of coffees awaits them. You’ll also have the chance to taste or buy some of the best Côte Roannaise wines… So what are you waiting for? If you want the finest French cuisine, head for Le Bois sans Feuilles restaurant in Ouches which is part of the prestigious Troisgros restaurant group, an established name in Roanne since 1957. The restaurant has been awarded 3 Michelin stars and has been described by some as the best restaurant in the world. Celebrities such as Jacques Brel, Johnny Hallyday, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, Tony Parker and Coluche have been counted among its numerous guests.
