La Roche castle

Those lucky enough to spend a few days in the Roanne region must visit the splendid La Roche castle, just twenty kilometres from Roanne. This historic landmark has stood right in the middle of the Loire since the 13th century. To discover every nook and cranny, there is a dramatised tour led by actor-guides, and 2 escape games for those seeking adventure. Note that in autumn, when the Loire River’s water level is low, the castle is no longer submerged. It sits on a rocky outcrop and is transformed into a mighty fortress that truly dominates the landscape!

 

The Pêt d’Âne

This is one of the best views of the Roanne region! The Pêt d’Âne site offers breathtaking landscapes, including the largest meander of the Loire River, with the Monts du Lyonnais and the Forez plain in the background. A must-see spot where you can stop for a moment, picnic or hike in the Cierve woods.

Saint Jean-Saint-Maurice village

If there’s one village you should definitely visit near Roanne, it’s Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire. This village picturesque village boasts a magnificent medieval centre, an imposing keep and a spectacular view of the surrounding area, as it is set in the meandering Loire. You’ll also find a number of workshops run by local craftspeople. Furthermore, the village is on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, making it a key stopover.

 

Lake Villerest

On a fine summer’s day, you can dip in Lake Villerest, just 10 km from the centre. Swimming is supervised during summer, and you’ll find a sandy beach, water slides for children and paddle boats for those who want to get away from the shore. The surrounding hiking trails are also very pleasant for the more sporty among you.

 

Saint-Haon-le-Châtel Village

Perched on a rocky outcrop, this village has stood the test of time. To this day, you can still see remnants from its medieval period, particularly its ramparts and towers. In addition, there are some beautiful mansions from the Renaissance period, giving the village an unrivalled charm. The village’s little bonus is its exceptional panoramic view of the surrounding area!

 

The Renaison dams

The Loire carved its path through the heart of the forest, and the two dams at Renaison were built to supply drinking water to the entire Roanne region. The first dam was completed at the end of the 19th century, while the other was added in 1976. There are many beautiful trails along the dams, incredible viewpoints, walks in the surrounding area and even a leisure park with donkey rides, a mini-golf course and all sorts of activities for children.

 

Véloire

For those who love cycling, there’s the verdant 25km-long Véloire route that takes you on a tour of the north of the region. Starting from the Roanne port, you can rent a bike or take your own for a picturesque ride through a variety of landscapes to discover the countryside around Roanne. The route takes you through some magnificent scenery and the charming Charlieu village, ranked among France’s 100 most beautiful villages.

 

The Gravière aux Oiseaux

The Gravière aux Oiseaux is one of the most interesting sites in the region, offering peace and quiet, walks and relaxation. Here you can watch birds, spot frogs, dragonflies and butterflies, and enjoy a soothing spot for a picnic or a stroll.
