View over the bay and the museum

22 vue sur la baie et le musee poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Rio de Janeiro, La Cidade Maravilhosa – The City of Wonders

Take a few steps back from the museum and take a good look at it. That pristine white structure against the turquoise bay water is truly something special. You can now clearly see the artificial platform it’s built on, and the massive cantilevered roof. Also in view is the bridge linking Rio to Niteroi, the President Costa e Silva Bridge (who, for your information, was the head of the military dictatorship). Construction began on the 9th of November 1968, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II herself, during her first official visit to Brazil. It looks massive, doesn’t it? It’s over 13 km long, with almost 9 kilometers stretching across the bay. Back then, it was the second-longest bridge in the world, saving people a crazy 120-kilometer detour! Today, it is the longest concrete bridge in South America.
