Thufa Hill

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Reykjavik, The Smoky Bay

A few mountains, lots of water, and sitting right in the middle of it all, a small green hill. Small? Certainly from a distance, but the closer you get to this feature, the more you feel its 8 meters of height. That’s almost like a 4-story building, believe it or not. We’d love to tell you that this hill is one of the island’s natural mysteries, but that would be lying to you. And we’re more the type to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. So let’s get to the point! This mound is actually a work of art. Called “þúfa,” which means tuft or small mountain in Icelandic, it was designed in 2013 by national artist Ólöf Nordal. More than just a bridge between nature and the city, it’s a place that was conceived as a bubble of serenity and meditation. It took 4,500 tons of gravel and several patches of grass to create it, making it one of the country’s largest artistic achievements. At its summit, you’ll find an old wooden shed, similar to those historically used to dry fish in the wind. Because let’s remember, fishing was the island’s lifeline for centuries – for food, clothing, and oil. However, you had to put up with some pretty strong fishy smells in return. Due to its position at the mouth of the harbor, Thufa hill offers a breathtaking view of Reykjavik’s skyline, its marina, and its natural setting to all those who dare to climb it. Really nothing to be intimidated by.
