Saint-Georges Palace

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Rennes, Queen Of Britanny
You are now standing in front of the beautiful Saint-Georges palace. You have to picture that, in the 11th century, you would be standing outside of the city’s walls, and in front of a great benedictine Abbey, founded by Duc Alain III. In 1670, the Abbess Madelaine de La Fayette had the abbey rebuilt as we see it toady. If you look closely, you will see the letters of her first name written on top of the arches. During the French Revolution, the abbey was turned into barracks, and it now houses municipal offices. This palace is enhanced by this beautiful formal garden.
