Rue de la Soif

08 rue de la soif rennes poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Rennes, Queen Of Britanny

You now arrive to the small Saint-Michel Square, that opens up to the North on the famous Rue de la Soif. Rennes is renowned in France forbeing young at heart and full of students. So it is only natural for it to be the proud owner of this famous street “rue de la soif”, literally “the Street of Thirst”. Well ladies and gentleman, here it is! A festive symbol of the Breton capital, you have at your disposal the French record for the number of bars per square meter! And it’s not a recent thing! When the city still had ramparts, suburbs were built nearby, to offer services to those who arrived late at night, and found themselves in front of a closed door. As Saint-Michel street lead to one of the entrance gates, it was already packed with cafés and inns during the Middle Ages!  The tradition has persisted, so much so that you now have a bar every seven meters! I now leave you to enjoy it, as visiting a city can make you thirsty! If you’d rather come back later, I suggest you continue our itinerary towards Rallier du Baty Square on your right.
