Lices Square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Rennes, Queen Of Britanny
It is probably hard to imagine, but it was here, on the Place des Lices, that the constable Duguesclin, the quintessential knight and a major figure of the Hundred Years’ War, fought his first battle ! This square was called a “medievel closed field”, where one could attend knights tournaments! This is why the square is so long and narrow. But since 1622, nearly 300 producers have entered the arena every Saturdayto bring to life one of the biggest and most beautiful markets in France! A true institution, and definitely a highlight if you are here on a week-end! Otherwise, be sure to take your time while admiring the great townhouses and the half-timbered houses, as well as the metallic Halles, built in 1870, following the model of the new covered markets in Paris, made out of glass and steel. A few metres further on, you will see the Lices Square clock. It’s the perfect place to set up a meeting in Rennes. You should know that until the 18th century, this place had a far less pleasant meaning! Indeed this was where the condemned were hung! Charming isn’t it? Ironically enough, the street leading to this place it is named Innocents street.
