Hoche square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Rennes, Queen Of Britanny
You are now on the delightful Hoche Square, bordered by chestnut trees, and charming townhouses. The city’s architect, Jean-Baptiste Marteno laid this plaza out at the end of the 19th century. Archery contests, firework shows, parties, balls and concerts were organized here at the beginning of the 20th century. You immediately noticed buildings that are worth spending some time on! The edifice at the corner on your left is the Couasnon building, built by the architect of the same name in 1908, following New Art inspiration. Right next to it, at no. 2, you’ll find a more recent building, but equally remarkable, especially for its incredible glass roof. Its architecture was rewarded in 2020 by the “Trophées de la construction”, which is an organization that honors innovating and positive buildings each year. On the other edge of the square, you will encounter a castle straight from the the Disney Universe. That is “hotel Galicier”, a true treasure of Rennes’ heritage. This neo-gothic castle, with its pointy turret was built in 1893, by the family of the same name. They lived on the first floor, as the ground floor was for the servants. Nowadays, the townhouse is divided into many apartments, so sadly, it’s impossible to visit .
