Britanny’s parliament

18 parlement de bretagne rennes poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Rennes, Queen Of Britanny

The Parliament is a true symbol of Britanny. Its assembly was established in the 13th century by the Dukes of Brittany. Later, in the 16th century, itbecame a Parliament under the French Ancien Régime meaning that it rendered justice in the name of the King of France. However, this responsibility did not prevent the Parliament from fighting for the interests of the people, defending Breton liberties and influencing the life of the entire province. The building you see today, designed by the architect of the Luxembourg Palace himself, witnessed the sittings of the Parliament until its disapperance during the French Revolution. Destroyed by fire in the 90s, despite having escaped the 1720 fire, it has been perfectly restored and now houses the Brittany Court of Appeal and the “Ille-et-Vilaine Cours d’Assise”.
