Museums: Quito has several interesting museums.
The City Museum, located in the former Saint John of God Hospital.
The Guayasamín Museum, dedicated to renowned Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín and located in his home. Nearby, the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man) displays much of his poetic and socially engaged work.
The Virgin of El Panecillo: Quito’s emblem is also the tallest aluminum statue in the world! Reach it by taxi from the center or by tourist bus.
The Teleférico: This cable car in the city center takes you in 8 minutes up to 3,945 meters on Cruz Loma Hill, on the eastern slope of the Pichincha volcano. Up there, besides the view, you’ll find the Vulcania amusement park, numerous hiking trails, and restaurants. Bonus: you can even bring your bike for a small extra fee!
After exploring Quito’s old historic center, it’s time to discover the surroundings! There’s plenty to see around the capital, so don’t hesitate to use it as your base for a few days!
Otavalo
The market in the small town of Otavalo is almost as famous as Quito! And for good reason! This charming town, perched at over 2,500 meters, is surrounded by stunning volcanoes and rich in artisanal tradition. It’s a postcard image of Ecuador, with colorful clothing, braided hair of the locals, bustling markets full of fruits, and plenty of local crafts. It’s the perfect place to stock up on beautiful wool sweaters for those chilly French winter evenings! Beyond the famous market, take the chance to visit the lakes of San Pablo and Cuicocha for a taste of the sublime Quilotoa Loop, as well as the Peguche waterfall just 10 minutes from Otavalo. Nearby, don’t miss the village of Cotacachi, renowned for leatherwork, and Condor Park, where you can observe impressive birds of prey!
Cotopaxi
The star volcano of Ecuador is none other than Cotopaxi, located in the park of the same name. Rising to 5,897 meters, it dominates the Ecuadorian Andes between Quito and Latacunga. It is an active volcano, still considered one of the most dangerous in the world. (Except for the Galápagos) all national parks in Ecuador are free to enter, so technically you can reach Cotopaxi on your own. You can hike to the José Ribas refuge at 4,800 meters. However, if you want to summit the volcano, that’s another matter. If you’re experienced enough, check with specialized agencies in Quito and go with a professional guide. And don’t forget to send us your photos!
Pululahua
Just 5 minutes from the Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World), lies the extinct Pululahua volcano. Along with Yellowstone, they are the only two inhabited volcanic craters on the planet. You can visit the volcano’s geo-botanical reserve and admire views over the valley. Its name in Kichwa means “cloud of water,” so expect fog and humidity! The best chance for a clear view is early in the morning. From the crater viewpoint, several hiking trails allow you to explore this national park in more depth.
Mitad del Mundo
The famous “Middle of the World” is a must-see attraction in Ecuador. Everyone wants a photo on the iconic yellow line! The Intiñan Museum, just 200 meters away, sits on what is believed to be the true equator line. An open-air exhibition showcases local cultures. You’ll discover indigenous daily life, from guinea pig farming to the head-shrinking Shuar! Fun demonstrations like water flowing without swirling and muscle strength loss complete the program.
Papallacta Hot Springs
After all these adventures, why not unwind in the volcanic hot springs of Papallacta, perched at 3,250 meters in a stunning setting? A well-deserved moment of relaxation away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
