Text version

Nestled in the slopes of the Guagua Pichincha volcano at over 2,800 meters above sea level, Ecuador’s capital reveals an exceptional heritage. Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century atop the ruins of an ancient Inca city, Quito boasts the best-preserved historic center in Latin America! Despite the devastating earthquake of 1917, the city has managed to keep its colonial core intact and preserve its original character. Quito showcases the pinnacle of what is known as the “Quito School” of art, a unique blend of indigenous and European artistic traditions, and stands as one of Spanish America’s greatest contributions to universal art. A rich program awaits you in Quito if you appreciate stunning architecture, renowned religious works, and deep historical heritage. But the city is also at the heart of spectacular nature! Quito—meaning “the center of the world” in ancient languages—is surrounded by volcanoes, forests dotted with waterfalls, thermal springs, and beautiful lakes. Nearby villages promise authentic cultural discoveries rooted in ancestral traditions and artisanal craftsmanship. Before exploring the region, let’s first take the pulse of the country in its most emblematic city, with a complete 5-kilometer walk through a magnificent historic center that, alongside Krakow, was among the first in the world to be fully classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Top Things to Do

Set off to explore lush nature on a full-day guided tour to the Mindo Cloud Forest, departing from Quito

Powered by GetYourGuide

Good to know !

Recommended starting point

No need to worry about where to begin! Our tours are designed as a loop, so you can jump in wherever you are. The navigation system and audioguide will automatically adjust to your location. However, if you happen to be nearby, we do have a preferred starting point: Plaza de la Independencia

Recommended parking downtown

Dowtown Parking, rue Vicente Leon N7-41

It’s unlikely you’ll be driving in Ecuador. But for the few brave souls who do have a car, we recommend leaving it at your hotel if possible. Few accommodations have their own parking, but most hotels offer access to secure partner parking lots. Never leave valuables in your car!

Weather

Quito, at an altitude of 2,850 meters, enjoys a temperate or subtropical mountain climate. So, while it’s on the Equator, it’s high up in the mountains. Temperatures are spring-like year-round, with a relatively short dry season from June to mid-September, and a rainy season the rest of the year. March is generally the wettest month. The ideal time to visit the country is during our summer, when you’ll find temperatures around 20°C and plenty of sunshine.

Currency

Contrary to what you might expect, Ecuador uses the US dollar (USD)! The country had its own currency until the year 2000—the sucre, named after General Sucre, the country’s liberator. But after the sucre collapsed, Ecuador adopted the US dollar to stabilize its economy. During your trip, you’ll mostly pay in cash. It’s best to use small bills, as large ones are often suspected of being counterfeit. You’ll also see sucre centavos still circulating alongside the dollar, with the same value to simplify small expenses. One sucre centavo equals one US cent. If you use your bank card, be aware that Ecuadorian banks charge a commission plus VAT when you withdraw cash. So, it’s ideal to bring your dollars from France to avoid poor exchange rates.

Got Some Extra Time?

If you only have one day in Quito, focus on discovering the historic center with our tour featuring the main highlights of the Ecuadorian capital. If you have more time, don’t miss the chance to explore the city more deeply.

The Neighborhoods of La Floresta and Guápulo: These two neighborhoods, popular among travelers, are the new trendy and hipster barrios of the capital. Guápulo, more bohemian, has a village-like feel with its steep streets lined with white houses and colorful shutters. Floresta buzzes with vibrant nightlife, bars, cafés, original shops, and street art.

Parks and Gardens: Quito boasts many beautiful parks with several points of interest.

Ejido Park: This park naturally marks the boundary between the old town and the new city, housing over a thousand native plant species and about twenty centuries-old trees.

La Carolina Park: Very lively and popular with sports enthusiasts for its various sports fields and bike paths. La Carolina also hosts the botanical gardens, a magnificent showcase of Ecuador’s incredible biodiversity.

Museums: Quito has several interesting museums.

The City Museum, located in the former Saint John of God Hospital.

The Guayasamín Museum, dedicated to renowned Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín and located in his home. Nearby, the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man) displays much of his poetic and socially engaged work.

The Virgin of El Panecillo: Quito’s emblem is also the tallest aluminum statue in the world! Reach it by taxi from the center or by tourist bus.

The Teleférico: This cable car in the city center takes you in 8 minutes up to 3,945 meters on Cruz Loma Hill, on the eastern slope of the Pichincha volcano. Up there, besides the view, you’ll find the Vulcania amusement park, numerous hiking trails, and restaurants. Bonus: you can even bring your bike for a small extra fee!

After exploring Quito’s old historic center, it’s time to discover the surroundings! There’s plenty to see around the capital, so don’t hesitate to use it as your base for a few days!

Otavalo

The market in the small town of Otavalo is almost as famous as Quito! And for good reason! This charming town, perched at over 2,500 meters, is surrounded by stunning volcanoes and rich in artisanal tradition. It’s a postcard image of Ecuador, with colorful clothing, braided hair of the locals, bustling markets full of fruits, and plenty of local crafts. It’s the perfect place to stock up on beautiful wool sweaters for those chilly French winter evenings! Beyond the famous market, take the chance to visit the lakes of San Pablo and Cuicocha for a taste of the sublime Quilotoa Loop, as well as the Peguche waterfall just 10 minutes from Otavalo. Nearby, don’t miss the village of Cotacachi, renowned for leatherwork, and Condor Park, where you can observe impressive birds of prey!

Cotopaxi

The star volcano of Ecuador is none other than Cotopaxi, located in the park of the same name. Rising to 5,897 meters, it dominates the Ecuadorian Andes between Quito and Latacunga. It is an active volcano, still considered one of the most dangerous in the world. (Except for the Galápagos) all national parks in Ecuador are free to enter, so technically you can reach Cotopaxi on your own. You can hike to the José Ribas refuge at 4,800 meters. However, if you want to summit the volcano, that’s another matter. If you’re experienced enough, check with specialized agencies in Quito and go with a professional guide. And don’t forget to send us your photos!

Pululahua

Just 5 minutes from the Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World), lies the extinct Pululahua volcano. Along with Yellowstone, they are the only two inhabited volcanic craters on the planet. You can visit the volcano’s geo-botanical reserve and admire views over the valley. Its name in Kichwa means “cloud of water,” so expect fog and humidity! The best chance for a clear view is early in the morning. From the crater viewpoint, several hiking trails allow you to explore this national park in more depth.

Mitad del Mundo

The famous “Middle of the World” is a must-see attraction in Ecuador. Everyone wants a photo on the iconic yellow line! The Intiñan Museum, just 200 meters away, sits on what is believed to be the true equator line. An open-air exhibition showcases local cultures. You’ll discover indigenous daily life, from guinea pig farming to the head-shrinking Shuar! Fun demonstrations like water flowing without swirling and muscle strength loss complete the program.

Papallacta Hot Springs

After all these adventures, why not unwind in the volcanic hot springs of Papallacta, perched at 3,250 meters in a stunning setting? A well-deserved moment of relaxation away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Discover the natural wonders surrounding Quito: hike through Cotopaxi National Park, visit the Middle of the World and nearby volcanoes, and unwind in the hot springs of Papallacta
