Mont Frugy

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Quimper, Cornouaille’s Capital in All Its Glory
Rising like a vast green wall alongside the Odet, Mont Frugy is an inseparable part of Quimper’s landscape. Locals know it so well that they hardly notice it anymore—but for you, dear visitors, it’s quite the opposite. And it’s easy to see why—this hill towers 70 meters above the city and commands attention. First mentioned as early as the 11th century, Mont Frugy has withstood the passage of time and weathered many storms. In the 18th century, it was little more than a scrub-covered moorland, sparsely wooded and mostly used for pig grazing. Not exactly majestic, well, at least at first glance. Yet, during the French Revolution, it was from this very rise that Quimper briefly inherited the name Montagne-sur-Odet, or “Mountain-on-Odet,” a title it held for just one year. Watching over the city for centuries, Mont Frugy suddenly lost its leafy crown on the night of October 15th to 16th, 1987, when a violent hurricane swept through and stripped away nearly all six hectares of vegetation. Frugy became, quite literally, the bald mountain. But that’s all behind us now. Today, Mont Frugy is once again a vital part of city life—a favorite spot for relaxing walks, panoramic views, and even sporting events like the Quimper Urban Trail. Whether you’re after fresh air, nature, or a bit of local history, the city’s very own “mountain” has something to offer.
