This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Quimper, Cornouaille’s Capital in All Its Glory

A timber-framed façade decorated with colorful faience plates—you’d have to be seriously distracted not to notice this iconic Quimper landmark. Today, it houses a charming souvenir shop, but there’s much more to the story. Let’s take a little step back in time. During the Ancien Régime, inns called “Golden Lion” were common across France, and of course in the 18th century among the dozen inns of Quimper there was one as well. Originally located near the Médard gate, then moved to the bishop’s palace around 1792, the establishment claimed some pretty prestigious guests over the years, including the Emperor of Germany and the Duke of Chartres. But in 1809, the bishop’s palace was sold to the department, and the Golden Lion had to find a new home. Luckily, it didn’t go far—it settled right here, at the corner of Place Saint-Corentin. During the 19th century, the hotel expanded its services by operating a stagecoach relay. Over time, eight different owners would take the reins. By 1939, the Golden Lion became an annex of the Hôtel de l’Épée, a once-famous hotel on rue du Parc, now long gone. Then, in 1947, a new chapter began. A man named Alphonse Breton bought the property and turned it into a store selling paintings, watercolors, and drawings. Over time, he added faience, furniture, and tableware to the shelves. Today, the shop—called L’Art de Cornouaille—has been in the same family for three generations and proudly showcases local craftsmanship, especially Quimper’s famous faience. It’s a must-visit if you’re looking for the perfect souvenir, whether for yourself or as a gift. And don’t worry—there’s something here for every budget!
