Spanish Synagogue

Though our knowledge of architecture may be limited, we’re confident in saying that this building is a remarkable and radiant piece of construction. And you better agree! With its Arab-Andalusian influences similar to the Alhambra in Granada, the Spanish Synagogue offers us a breathtaking contrast from Prague’s usual scenery. As one of the most beautiful synagogues in the Jewish Quarter, it was built on what used to be the “Old School.” But don’t jump to any conclusion, this wasn’t actually a place of learning, but rather the oldest synagogue in Prague, dating back from the 12th century. After enduring many years of oppression, the Jewish community finally gained citizenship rights in 1867. Just one year later, this beautiful synagogue was born in a context of independence and renewal. Now part of the Jewish Museum of Prague tour, there is an entry fee. However, if you have been moved by its stunning exterior, you will certainly not be deceived by its beautiful interior decor, coming straight out of tales of the Arabian Nights.
